New research has revealed Edinburgh as the most sustainably switched-on city in the UK.
The survey of over 2,000 UK adults, conducted by plant-based spread producer Upfield – the name behind the Flora and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter brands – found 56% of Auld Reekie’s residents care if a brand makes a commitment to being sustainable.
This compares to fewer than half (46%) of Glaswegians.
The gap between the rival cities widens further when it comes to actual purchasing decisions: well over half of people from Edinburgh (63%) say they would buy from a brand that has better environmental credentials compared to only 41% of Weegies.
Furthermore, 52% in Edinburgh would happily spend more on food products if they have a lower impact on the environment compared to 45% in Glasgow.
Glaswegians can take some comfort in knowing that their attitude to the environment is by no means the UK’s worst. The survey found that a mere 11% of Geordies are bothered if a company takes a greener approach to production.
Damian Guha, General Manager of Upfield UK & Ireland said: “We are encouraging people to understand the impact their food choices have on the planet and the effect it will have over the years.
“It’s great to see from this research that more people are conscious of a company’s sustainability mission and consider this before purchasing products. We hope this awareness continues to grow.”
