Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has unveiled a limited-edition whisky that pays homage to one of Edinburgh’s most iconic traditions: the One O’Clock Gun.
The aptly named ‘One O’Clock Gun Whisky’ is a single malt distilled at the Glenallachie distillery in Speyside. It was matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead cask for 17 years before being bottled by the Edinburgh Whisky Company.
The aging process has resulted in a whisky with a delicate nose of golden syrup, dried fruits, and baked pastries, followed by a palate of lemon curd, ginger, and honey, culminating in a long, lingering finish with spicy oak notes.
Only 288 bottles have been produced, each at a natural cask strength of 56.5% ABV, non-chill filtered and with no added colour.
“The One O’Clock Gun is an iconic part of Edinburgh’s heritage,” said Natasha Troitino, Head of Retail at HES. “What better way to celebrate this unique part of our history than with a suitably unique whisky?”
A gun has been fired every Monday to Saturday on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle at precisely 1pm since 1861. Originally intended as a timekeeping signal for ships in the nearby Firth of Forth its main purpose now is to give lunchtime visitors to the castle a bit of a scare.
The One O’Clock Gun Whisky is available for purchase at Stòr, the online shop of Historic Environment Scotland, and the Edinburgh Castle Whisky and Finest Food Shop, priced at £185 for a 70cl bottle.
