Islay-based single malt whisky brand Laphroaig has been granted a new Royal Warrant of Appointment to The King.
Laphroaig is the only single malt to have been awarded a Royal Warrant by Charles. The King is a whisky aficionado and Laphroaig 15-year-old is said to be his favourite dram.
Charles has visited the distillery on a number of occasions, most notably in 1994 when he made headlines around the world attempting to land a passenger jet of the Queen’s Flight at Islay airport. The plane overshot the runway and ended up with its nose buried in mud. No-one was injured in the £1m prang but the aircraft was so badly damaged that a scheduled 20-minute visit turned into a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the distillery while a replacement was sourced.
Royal Warrants are reviewed every five years. Under the latest application, submitted in 2023, the distillery’s business practices have been appraised through the Royal Warrant Sustainability Criteria; the award of the warrant recognises Laphroaig’s responsible approach to the environmental and social impacts of its business.
